Most often than not, each day that passes is en event most of us fail to pay much attention to. Most often than not, we think that the events of a certain day is not worth taking note of, something not worth paying attention to, something not worth depositing into the bank of our lifetime memories. How wrong can we get! For each and everyday that passes is an important part of our lives. Each day that passes is a thread woven into the tapestry of our complex existence… a meaningful period in our life’s complex history. Without a single uneventful day, we won’t be able to look back to memorable and fruitful years behind us. Without the lessons gathered from the swiftly passing days and through emotionally grueling experiences, we won’t be able to build a LIFE ahead of us.
What makes a day eventful or memorable anyway… meeting a new boyfriend for the first time, the first time one meets the love of his/her life, the first time one becomes a mother… the first time one receives an award? Yes, we only remember most those days when we got to experience our exciting “firsts”. Maybe it is because of the novelty. But when the novelty wears off, the excitement of the “first time” is soon forgotten and is replaced by the harsh realities of life. The person one considered “Mr. Right” at first meeting soon turns into “Mr. Nightmare” after disillusionment sets in. That’s the natural course of things… when the novelty wears off, Miss Right turns into Miss Mistake.
Why do these things happen? For a lot of reasons, I guess. It may be because of the fact that most people give much emphasis only on the momentous days in our lives… and when the term momentous comes in, thoughts of those happy times we experienced come flooding our minds. We tend to be oblivious of those days when we stumbled and fell face down. We tend to forget those days when we came to school with our uniforms worn inside out. We tend to forget the missed notes during our own concerts. We tend to forget the zero posted boldly on the upper right hand corner of our paper. Yes, we forget the low points in our lives. Or maybe, we forget those events by choice because forgetting them could somewhat mean that we were not able to make mistakes. Yes, we deny that we are but humans who are capable of doing mistakes. But forgetting those ”low days” could also mean our inability to accept our own weaknesses. And unless we acknowledge our weaknesses, we will never be able to work on improving ourselves… we will never be able to compete with ourselves and become better persons because we have , by choice, tried to put aside the best lessons that we could ever learn— the lessons we get from those small failures that we met each and everyday of our lives.
Life goes on the way it should go. And we live on with our lives. But knowing now what we haven’t known before, here’s hoping that each day be given importance… here’s hoping that every single day that passes be viewed as a new page on which one’s life must be written on. Most often than not, we don’t get to choose the events that we must illustrate or write on the blank page that is laid for us each day… we only get to control our human reactions and at the end of each day, we only have memories to look back to and lessons to learn.
Each day is a chance to gather moments. Be these moments good or bad, they are all worth keeping because these precious moments, no matter how insignificant they may seem, make us who we are.
